Northern Refrain was created to make room for conversations that are informed without becoming clinical, appreciative without becoming promotional, and candid without manufacturing conflict.
Why this exists
Northern California music is often described through its biggest names, but a region’s identity is also built by teachers, club stages, sound engineers, independent artists, record shops, rehearsal rooms and audiences that continue showing up.
Northern Refrain documents that ecosystem through long-form interviews, criticism, field reporting and local history. The goal is not to ask artists to repeat their biography. It is to ask what their work means now—and how they arrived there.
About Kevin
Kevin Clausen is a Northern California musician, music educator, performer and writer based in the San Jose area. His experience includes sixteen years of guitar, twelve years of drums and percussion, seven years of ukulele, and professional instruction for adult and youth students.
His approach combines a musician’s attention to process with an observer’s interest in memory, place and the difficult human truths that conventional promotion often leaves untouched.

Alexander Albatross is the gonzo-styled counterpart to Northern Refrain founder Kevin Clausen—a pseudonymous correspondent reserved for the stories that require a little less distance and considerably more unpredictable observations.
Writing from somewhere between participation, intoxication, and questionable judgment, Albatross covers Northern California music, nightlife, characters, venues, and the strange circumstances surrounding them. His dispatches favor firsthand experience over polished detachment, while remaining grounded in the people and communities at the center of each story.
When conventional reporting tells you what happened, Alexander Albatross would rather tell you what it felt like to be there.
