San Jose has always been a personal hidden gem of mine, although it is hardly hidden from the world as far as maps are concerned. The city—and, most importantly, its inhabitants—make it more than a gem. It is a diamond in the rough that continues to smooth itself edge by edge, event by event, shining brighter with every new gathering, performance and shared experience.
If you have driven through downtown, you may have heard Rebelskamp in passing. If you have relatives living in the area and visit occasionally, you have surely heard their name. If you have lived in San Jose your entire life, Rebelskamp feels like family.

Growing your own
The group takes the idea of “Grow Your Own” and puts it into practice—not only through performance, but naturally, creatively and communally. Rebelskamp represents the kind of local artistry that does not simply occupy a stage; it contributes to the culture surrounding it.
Any time I wandered through the SoFA Street Fair, attended a larger show at The Ritz or found myself spending another late night at The Caravan Lounge, I would inevitably run into one of the fine fellows from Rebelskamp—even when they were not performing that evening.
That presence matters.
What local music is really about
Rebelskamp, collectively and individually, has continually reminded me what local music is really about:
- Showing up. Watching fellow musicians succeed and cheering them on without reservation.
- Being unapologetically unique. Continuing to explore new avenues of sound, rhythm and vibration.
- Sharing with the community. Collaborating with artists both locally and nationally.
- Supporting independent thought and creativity. One rhyme at a time.
These qualities cannot be manufactured through publicity or reduced to a single performance. They are built gradually through participation, consistency and a sincere willingness to support the people sharing the same stages, sidewalks and neighborhoods.
A San Jose treasure
If you were to ask why I adore and admire Rebelskamp, I could not offer one singular reason. It is the music, certainly, but it is also the fellowship surrounding it. It is their individuality, their curiosity and their willingness to remain present within the community that helped shape them.
It is all of the above.
